bad spirits
Saturday 22 February 1230-1430pm

Meet at Durham Museum and Heritage Centre, then onwards to Durham Castle.

Durham Museum open from 1230 event starts 1pm in the sculpture garden at the Museum, then we will move onto Durham Castle.

Bad Spirits present Selah, a sound performance framed within film projections and sculptural installations.

The event will offer an afternoon promenade experience for the audience, starting in the Sculpture Garden of Durham Museum and Heritage Centre before moving to various locations within Durham Castle. Selah considers Durham Castle as a residence, thinking of the home environment as a place of support, rest and care.‘Selah’ is a musical instruction, thought to mean ‘pause', creating a moment of silence for introspection and contemplation. Bad Spirits will highlight female histories, including those of the philosopher Mary Midgley (whose archive is housed in Palace Green Library) as well as the saint, composer and poet Hildegard von Bingen. The performance aims to explore their outlooks and methods as potential, towards imagining an alternative future and present.

Bad Spirits is a curatorial project / a performance / an artistic collaboration between Dawn Bothwell & Paul Stewart. For Selah they are collaborating with Gayle Meikle who will read a text prepared for a previous Bad Spirits event on Mother’s Day 2019 and Sally Pilkington performing with the Organ. Bad Spirits creates environments that support collaboration, collectivism and making in the company of others.

Doors open at Durham Museum and Heritage Centre at 12.30pm, performance starts at 1pm and ends in Durham Castle at 2.30pm

This performance was commissioned by Hazel Donkin as part of the Contemporary Art in Focus series supported by the Centre for Visual Arts and Culture and University College, Durham University.
